The term kebab means "grill", "grilled meat", and refers to a variety of grilled meat dishes found in many countries that were generally part of the Ottoman and Persian worlds (including North India). In its French-language usage, as in other Western languages, the term used alone refers specifically to the spit-roasted meat sandwich or doner kebab, as well as, by metonymy, to the type of restaurant that serves it. Among the most common equivalents of the term döner kebab, the word sharwana(and its variants) is used in the Middle East. These terms all refer either to the meat and its preparation, or to the corresponding sandwich.
