Maniguette (Aframomum melegueta) is a perennial plant that produces a brown pod containing numerous small seeds. Found in subtropical Africa (where it is often used as an aphrodisiac), it belongs to the Aframomum genus and the same botanical family as ginger, the Zingiberaceae. Its seed is used as a condiment. It is sometimes called malaguette, Guinea pepperor even pepper of paradise.
